Welcome to HeavyEquipmentForums. Joined: Apr 19, Messages: 76 Location: Wasatch. I tried starting my rebuilt motor this morning and it doesn't fire. My suspicion is the timing of the injector pump. When I put the motor back together I simply aligned all the gears to the marks I made and installed the pump while the motor was at TDC.

At this point I really haven't done anything to investigate. I may have other issues that is causing this condition as well. I decided to visit my favorite place and ask for help and any suggestions that I should try. Is it mechanical shutoff or electric? If electric do you have power at the solenoid?

There are no marks on the idler gear between the cam and injection pump. There are 3 marks on the crank. There is a letter Y and a Z on the injection pump drive gear.

They are approximately 90 degrees apart. I could post a picture of them tomorrow. Back to top. It's easy for you on the 6 cyl. You only time the cam and crank.

The fuel pump is pin timed with a bolt in the flywheel holding the engine at 1TDC compression. The is a bit more complicated due to the balancer shafts needing timing as well. Later Bob. I understand the pin timing. But if you have to take the crankshaft out That will not keep it in time while the crank is out. Also there is no dowel in the end of the crank to align the flywheel with the crank.

There is a witness of where the dowel would be on either the flywheel or the crank. Will have to look. Also I have to change the crank. Number 6 rod is shot.

One main moved the amount of the punch on the bearing that is supposed to keep them aligned in the block and cap. Cat is so closed mouth about any information on things. I could understand that better on the newer engines. A 25year old engine seems a bit ridiculous though.

It got a skidder motor which appears correct but is very weak in the loader.

Back that adjustment out for more fuel. Some of them are shimmed, and you have to move shims from the top side of the stop assembly, to the bottom, to raise it up allowing more fuel delivery. Use the Specifications given in the book with the latest date. The name for the system is from the method used to control the amount of fuel in the fuel injection charge. This system has an injection pump and an injection valve for each cylinder.

The injec- tion pumps are in the fuel injection pump housing on the right side of the engine. The injection valves are in the precombustion chambers for PC engines and in adapters in the cylinder head for DI engines. The drive gear for the fuel transfer pump is on the front of the camshaft for the injection pumps. The carrier for the governor weights is bolted to the rear of the camshaft for the injection pumps.

The injec- tion pump housing has a bearing at each end to support the camshaft. The camshaft for the sleeve metering fuel system is driven by the timing gears at the front of the engine. The injection pumps, lifters and rollers, and the camshaft are all inside of the pump housing. The pump housing and the governor housing are full of fuel at transfer pump pressure fuel system pressure. The injection pump housing must be full of fuel before turning the camshaft.

The in- jection valves change the fuel to the correct fuel characteristic spray pattern for good combustion in the cylinders.

The fuel injection valves are installed in the pre- combustion chambers in engines equipped with pre- combustion chambers. An adapter takes the place of the precombustion chamber in engines equipped with direct injection. The precombustion chambers or adapters are installed in the cylinder heads. The water separator is installed between the fuel tank and the rest of the fuel system.

For efficiency in the action of the water separator, the fuel flow must come directly from the fuel tank and through the water separator. This is because the action of going through a pump or valves before the water separator lowers the effi- ciency of the water separator. Well, it wont be hard to turn if the injector is out because there will be no compression, but it is true that both valve rockers will have slight clearance at TDC Compression stroke, if the valves are adjusted properly. If you can find the point at which your probe wire stops rising exactly stops and then the point at which it begins to descend again, and then split the difference between those two points, you will be exactly at TDC.

Just make sure it is on the compression stroke you will know because it will be hard to turn usually also the rockers on the valves will be relaxed on that cylinder valves closed.

Thank you for all that. The only thing that has been done is injection pump removed, rebuilt, and replaced. On the crank pulley, there are markings. It appears to be 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 0, using the 1's as lines. Not sure, how to determine TDC according to these marks. I have rotated the pump in the direction of engine rotation several times hunting what I need, however, I don't detect much change. As in the engine starts, heavy fuel smoke, lazy as in retarded.

Even if you attempt to change the angle of the pump while engine is running, it is hard to detect any significant change in the performance of the engine.

Type of pump needed Does it have the sleeve metering style of pump on it the one with a plate bolted to the side of it or does it have the scroll type pump thinner and more roundish with no plate on the side. If it's sleeve metering style, it should have a pin to lock it in place at TDC and I can post how to do that.

If it's a scroll type system, there's a special adapter that'll lock the timing gear in the right place at TDC.

This is your timing hole for the injection pump. It will have a slot cut in the camshaft to insert your timing pin to lock the pump.

Remove the front advance cover. Remove the advance unit. You may want to check the weights inside. Over time the shoes will wear and make a groove in the thrust bearing. I just hit the high spots, If you want step-by-step detail let me know. There's only two o-rings between the block and pump, and one between front cover and pump.
